Siamese Cats – Rescue, Flavor, Enjoy

Recently, a reader asked me a good question about the Thai Kitty Curry recipe. The reader commented on the scarcity of available Siamese kitties in order to make the recipe.

First of all, as always, a chef can substitute the specific breed of kitty with a domestic shorthair (DSH). The most generic of cats, they don’t have much of a specific flavor profile and can generally go well with any dish. I find that domestic longhair cats (DLH) have less fat (more fur so they require less fat to keep warm) and the flavors don’t absorb as well into the meat.

Secondly, if you’re not lucky enough to find a stray, and if you’ve shopped at all the stores (i.e., checked at your local cat/animal shelters), you can look for breed-specific rescue adoption organizations. In the US, for Siamese kitties, there is www.siameserescue.org. They are internet based so you can browse at your own leisure. They have adoption centers in Virginia, Colorado, Texas, and California. Check out their website and see if it would be convenient to pick out a kitty in person. If not, you can still adopt online.

Good luck, and happy eating!
